Ash Wednesday (17 February 2010) marks the beginning of Lent. The Catholic Community participates in sharing and praying for missions running in Southern Africa, through its Bishops’ Lenten Appeal. For six weeks of Lent until Easter Sunday there is an opportunity to become more aware of the needy.

An Appeal to South African Leaders – is your sexual morality making you a worthy role model for the youth?

"You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honour your father and mother" (Mk. 19:20);

"But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Mt. 5:28);

The Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference expresses its strongest concern of the scandalous behaviour of leaders who shamelessly flout the norms of morality and decency, accepted and expected by the vast majority of people.

In order to promote the beauty of the Catholic priesthood, the web portal Catholic.net has launched a contest of priestly stories during the Year for Priests in which priests narrate the most inspiring moment of their priestly ministry. The prize for the best story will be a trip to Rome at the closing of the priestly year in June of 2010. Should the winner be residing in Rome, the prize will consist of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

Last week, South Africa celebrated, near Johannesburg, an important HIV milestone. Due to excellent partnership and program execution, management of a very large U.S. grant supporting HIV care and treatment for more than 60,000 people is shifting from the international hands of the CRS-led AIDSRelief consortium into the local hands of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC), St. Mary’s Hospital, and the Institute for Youth Development-South Africa.
